Is it me, or is summer shorter than I remember? When I was a kid we were out of school from Memorial Day until Labor Day. Summer was full of lazy days hanging out in the neighborhood with my friends from morning until the streetlamps came on in the evening. My friends and I were out of control. We road our bikes over homemade ramps and down dirt paths. “Look mom no hands.” all without helmets. We shot tin cans with BB guns and even each other on occasion, no eye protection needed. If you were lucky you had a pool to go to and a sunburn was the path to a good tan,. No sunscreen required. Our favorite place to get a drink was from Bob’s house, he had a well and the water was cold. No bottled water for us. Ah, the good ole days of summer.
But today, I went into the store and there they were, the “Back to School” sales signs. Folks I just checked my calendar and it’s only the middle of July. What’s going on? There are kids headed back to school the first week of August. That’s just crazy!
There’s no fighting it, it’s time to pack the book bags full of supplies. So allow me to suggestions a few items to add to your students bags.
First, fill them with your unconditional love and support. Teach them to be true to themselves and standup for the values you have taught them. Full their bags with praise and encouragement. Remind them that they will encounter people that will put them down, pick on them or make them feel bad about themselves. So teach them to be resilient, and to stand up for themselves. Remind them of the golden rule, to treat others like they would want to be treated.
Just one more thing. Give them something to share with someone who has less than they do. A kind word would do just fine.
